If you've never heard of kefir before, it might help to know that it is a fermented cultivated milk beverage. It's almost like sour, thick milk, only a lot more appetizing.
In this recipe, we blend the kefir with frozen berries, which sweetens the flavor, and makes the smoothie fruity, thick and delicious. This raspberry and strawberry kefir smoothie is one of my favorite breakfast smoothies because of the nutritional benefits.

Ingredients
Kefir: This thick, sour milk drink has the perfect texture for smoothies.
Frozen strawberries + frozen raspberries: The berries give the smoothie a lovely flavor. By using frozen berries, the smoothie will also be thicker, and really cold.
Honey: The sweetness of the honey balances out the sourness of the kefir. This can be omitted, or substituted with another sweetener such as maple syrup.
Instructions
You can find full instructions + ingredient measurements in the recipe card at the bottom of this page
One: Add all the ingredients to a blender. I like to add the kefir at the bottom, as this helps the fruits blend easier.
Two: Blend until smooth. You might have to stop and push down the edges with a spatula a few times.
Serve the smoothie immediately.
Top tips
- I love to use frozen fruit and berries in smoothies. The drink will be extra cold, and extra thick.
- Feel free to add or substitute any berries as you please.
- If you don't have a blender, you might be able to use a food processor or hand blender instead.
Serving suggestions
Kefir smoothie is a quick and healthy breakfast smoothie. You can also serve it as a refreshing beverage at any time of the day.
I sometimes like to pair my breakfast smoothies with a snack to make the meal a little more filling. Here are some of my favorite recipes to pair this with:
- Protein Overnight Oats
- Banana Protein Pancakes
- Blueberry Granola
- Smashed Egg on Toast
- Smoked Salmon and Avocado Toast
- Raspberry Turnovers
Variations
Other berries: Feel free to replace the frozen berries with other berries like blueberries, blackberries or mixed forest berries. You can also use frozen chunks of fruit like banana or mango. This will naturally completely change the flavor of the smoothie, and it's a great way to add more variety.
Extra protein: Add a little protein powder to your blender. Perfect before a workout.
Garnish: You can also garnish the smoothie with things like chia seeds, freeze dried fruit, granola or nuts. These will add a lovely bite to the drink.
Smoothie bowl: Decrease the amount of kefir to make a really thick smoothie. Serve it in a bowl, and eat it with a spoon. You can even top your kefir smoothie bowl with fresh fruit, granola or rolled oats.

Leftovers
This smoothie will taste best immediately after making it. Alternatively, you can store it in a sealed container in a refrigerator for up to a day. Smoothies typically separate when they are stored for longer periods of time, so I recommend that you either shake or stir the drink before serving it.
