I love a good, fruity, refreshing smoothie recipe, and this blackberry smoothie is just perfect. You can use fresh or frozen blackberries - I prefer the frozen berries because they are cheaper and more convenient.
You can enjoy your smoothie as a light meal, or as a refreshing drink served with your favorite breakfast. This recipe is gluten free, egg free, nut free and soy free. It can also easily be made vegan and dairy free by using a dairy free yogurt alternative.
Ingredients
To make this simple smoothie you will only need 3 ingredients: blackberries, a banana and Greek yogurt.
You can use either frozen or fresh blackberries and banana. I like to use either a frozen banana or frozen berries, as they will chill the smoothie and make it a little thicker compared to using only fresh fruit.
If you don't have Greek yogurt, you can use any plain natural yogurt, or even blackberry yogurt. Look for a vegan yogurt alternative if you want to make it dairy free.
Instructions
Add the Greek yogurt to your blender, along with diced bananas and blackberries.
When blending smoothies, I prefer to place the softest ingredients in the bottom, as this helps the smoothie blend nicely. I suggest adding the yogurt first, followed by fresh ingredient, and leaving the frozen ingredient to last.
Blend until smooth. Depending on the make and model of your blender this can take from 20 seconds to 2 minutes. Use a spoon to push the ingredients down or scrape down the edges as required.
Pour the smoothie into glasses, and serve!
Top tips
Here is my best advice to help you succeed with the recipe:
- A good blender is essential. You might be able to make your smoothie with an immersion blender or a food processor, but a regular stand blender is best suited for the job.
- Smoothies taste best when you use very ripe bananas. Ideally they should have at least a few black spots. Avoid using green, or bright yellow bananas.
💡 TIP! If you have very ripe bananas and you're considering throwing them out, you can peel and slice them, and store them in your freezer. You'll then have frozen bananas ready to use in future smoothies.
Serving suggestions
Smoothies can be served as a light meal for breakfast, or as a quick and simple snack. You can also serve it as a refreshing drink along with your breakfast or lunch.
I particularly love to drink smoothies on hot summer days when I don't particularly feel like eating. It's also great for when you have a low appetite.
Variations
Sweet: I think this banana blackberry smoothie is plenty sweet on its own, but you can add a little honey or agave nectar to make it even sweeter.
Green smoothie: Add a handful or two or raw spinach. The leafy greens will not affect the flavor too much, but it will slightly alter the color of the smoothie. Super healthy, and a great way to incorporate more greens into your breakfast.
Add other fruits or berries: Feel free to add other frozen or fresh fruits to the smoothie. I like to add any leftover small amounts of blueberries, kiwis or cherries to this smoothie. It's a great way to avoid food waste, while adding more nutrition to your drink.
Blackberry protein smoothie: Add a small scoop of your favorite protein powder if you want a little extra protein in the beverage.
Leftovers
You can store leftover smoothie in a sealed jug or bottle in your refrigerator for up to a day. Keep in mind that if you used frozen ingredients, the leftover smoothie will most likely be a little thinner, as the frozen banana or berries will defrost over time.
Leftover smoothie also sometimes separate a little. This is completely normal. Simply give it a little shake before serving, and it will taste great.
Frequently asked questions
Smoothie can be made creamy by adding bananas, or a creamy liquid such as yogurt, milk or coconut milk.
The best way to make cold smoothies is by adding some frozen ingredients. Chilled ingredients also work well.
