Ingredients
To make perfect air fryer burgers, you will need ground beef, salt, pepper and additional seasoning. In this recipe we use garlic powder and paprika, but these can be substituted with any spices that you like.
You will also need your choice of burger toppings and side dishes. Pick your favorites, or check out the serving suggestions below!
Instructions
Add the beef and seasoning to a bowl, and use your hands or a spatula to combine the ingredients. Shape the burgers into similar sized patties - this recipe makes 4 quarter pounders but you can make them smaller if you prefer.
Preheat your air fryer to 390 °F / 200 °C. If you're using very lean ground beef, you will want to spray your air fryer basket with some olive oil spray or other cooking spray to prevent the burgers from sticking to it.
Place the burgers in the basket. Air fry for 3 minutes, then flip and cook for another 3 minutes. Make sure that they are cooked through.
If you want to add cheese, you can place the cheese on top of the hamburgers, turn the air fryer off, then place them back in the basket. It's important that the air fryer is turned off, or you might find that the cheese simply flies off the burgers!
Serve the air fryer burgers hot with your favorite toppings and sides.
Top tips
Here are my best advice on how you can make the best air fryer hamburgers:
- The exact cooking time will vary depending on the thickness of your burgers and how done you like them. Use a meat thermometer to ensure that you get the result you want.
- Don't overcrowd the basket.
- You can use any seasoning you like, or even add things like caramelized onions, crumbled feta cheese or finely chopped herbs.
Serving suggestions
You can naturally serve air fryer hamburgers like you would serve any burgers. Place them in a bun with tomatoes, ketchup, cheese, lettuce, onions, guacamole, Cilantro Lime Aioli, spicy burger sauce, yogurt ranch dip or any other toppings you like.
The burgers can be served with your favorite side dishes - like air fryer halloumi fries, air fryer rutabaga fries, garlic parmesan potato wedges, tomato and cucumber salad, Air Fryer Corn on the Cob or Greek pasta salad.
Variations
Looking to change up the burgers to suit your personal preferences, or your family's taste? Not a problem! Here are some of my favorite alternative ways to cook amazing burgers:
- Add diced chili or chili powder for a spicy twist.
- You can also use ground pork, turkey or chicken if you prefer other types of meat.
- Change burgers up by varying what you serve them with. Try different sauces, cheeses and other toppings.
- Mix in grated or finely diced cheese for cheese stuffed hamburgers.
Leftovers
Burgers are best served immediately, but they can be made ahead and stored for later too. I highly recommend storing the hamburger patties and toppings separately, rather than storing pre-assembled burgers (unless you want soggy buns and dry burgers!).
Store the air fried hamburgers in an airtight container in a refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat them quickly in an air fryer, a skillet, on the grill, or even in the microwave for a few minutes until they have warmed through.
You can also freeze the cooked burgers, and cook them in an air fryer, in an oven or on a grill from frozen.
Assemble the burgers with your warm burger patties, and enjoy!
How to cook frozen burgers in an air fryer
So what do you do if you have premade frozen burgers? Not a problem! Air fry frozen hamburgers at 390 °F / 200 °C until they have warmed throughout, typically 15-20 minutes. Flip them once halfway through cooking.
If you are using tiny or very large burgers, you might have to adjust the cooking time. The best way to ensure that they are cooked throughout is to use a meat thermometer.
Frequently asked questions
Absolutely! Air fry the burgers until they are hot throughout, then turn the air fryer off and add cheese. The heat from the air fryer will make the cheese melt, even after it has turned off. Avoid adding the cheese while the air fryer is still operating, as the cheese is likely to fly off!
