🥘 Ingredients
To make the best crispy air fried rutabaga fries, you will need rutabaga (UK: swede), cornstarch/cornflour, vegetable oil and seasoning.
You will also need an air fryer. I use this one from Tower, which is reasonable and works really well.
🔪 Instructions
Peel a rutabaga, and cut it into thin fries. They will have to be really thin like french fries if you want them to be crispy.
Place the fries in a bowl, and add cornstarch or cornflour. Shake and stir to completely cover the fries with a thin layer of starch. Add vegetable oil, and repeat so that all fries are covered with a thin layer of both cornstarch and oil.
Preheat your air fryer to 180°C / 356°F. Add the rutabaga to the air fryer basket. Cook for 18-22 minutes. The exact cooking time might vary depending on the size and make of your air fryer. Shake the basket every 3-4 minutes to ensure that the fries are evenly fried.
🧂 Seasoning
Add your favorite seasoning to these fries! Seasoning can be added either before or after air frying. Try salt and pepper, smoked paprika, cajun seasoning, peri peri seasoning, a BBQ dry rub or garlic powder.
💭 Top tips for crispy rutabaga fries
- Shake the air fryer often to allow every fry to cook evenly.
- Cut the rutabaga fries thinly. Cutting them into thick fries or wedges will give them a softer texture.
- Make sure to coat evenly with the cornflour and vegetable oil prior to frying the fries.
🥗 Serving suggestions
Air fryer rutabaga fries can be used exactly as you would use regular fries. Serve them with burgers, steak, chicken, fish, or finger foods.
🍲 Leftovers
Leftover rutabaga fries can be stored in the fridge up to 4 days, or frozen for later use. Keep in mind that the fries soften over time, and the leftovers are more similar to roasted rutabaga than fried. But they still taste great!
📋 Frequently asked questions
Are air fryer chips healthy? - As these chips are fried using air flows instead of hot oil, they will contain far less fat and are therefore considered very healthy. The nutritional content is very similar to roasted or boiled rutabaga.
Will these taste just like deep fried rutabaga fries? - No. They will still be crispy and delicious, but they will not have that greasy oil coating that deep fried fries typically have.
Is this recipe allergy friendly? - This recipe is soy free, nut free, egg free and dairy free. It is also vegan, and suitable for many diets.
Are rutabaga fries low carb? - Yes! Rutabaga has far less carbs than potatoes, and these fries are therefore an excellent low carb alternative to regular chips.

Tracie
These are delicious! I would never have thought about making fries from a rutabaga, but it is genius. Adding the seasoning before cooking is the way to go. The cornstarch and vegetable oil do add points on the Weight Watchers program but are necessary to get the desired results. I tried them without those items and the fries turned out rubbery and not very good.
Thanks for a healthier alternative to regular (and even sweet potato) fries!

Thank you Tracie, I'm so happy you like them! I agree, you definitely need a little oil and cornstarch, but they are still really healthy and yummy 🙂
