Ingredients
To make this recipe, you will need avocado, lettuce, onion, tomatoes, tortillas and mayo. These ingredients are all added directly to the wraps, and you can omit or substitute them as you please.
In addition, you will need chicken breasts, along with some seasoning. I use salt, pepper, garlic powder, lime juice, onion powder, cumin, paprika and chili powder. This flavor combination tastes great, and I highly recommend trying it, however you can substitute them for fajita seasoning or any other spices that you prefer.
Instructions
- Prepare the ingredients: Peel and slice the onions and avocado. Slice the tomatoes, cut the lettuce, and shred the cheese.
- Slice the chicken: Slice the chicken breasts into thin strips. To achieve the best results, you should always slice chicken against the grain. This means that you want to look for the tiny lines in the chicken breasts, and cut across them rather than cutting in a line with them.
- Cook the chicken: Heat up some vegetable oil in a pan on medium heat. Add the chicken breast strips and seasoning, and turn to coat the chicken evenly in the spices. Cook for a few minutes until golden, then flip and cook on the other side. The chicken only requires about 5 minutes of cooking in total, depending on how thick your chicken pieces are. Remove the chicken from the pan.
- Warm the tortillas: Add a flour or corn tortilla to the same pan that you just used to cook the chicken. Leave it for about 10 seconds, then flip. The tortilla will be warmed and softened, and also retains some flavor from the chicken seasoning. Repeat with the other tortilla(s).
- Layer the ingredients: Place the tortilla on a plate. Spread some mayo over the top. Then, add lettuce, sliced onions and tomatoes, avocado, and finally the chicken.
- Wrap it up: Wrap it up using your favorite method.
Top tips
- You can also of course make this wrap using leftover cooked chicken from a previous meal, or store bought precooked chicken.
- Warm the tortillas in the pan you used to cook the chicken. The wraps will not only be warm, but they will soak up the juices and seasoning from the chicken, giving them more flavor.
- If you want to give the chicken even more flavor, you can season the chicken pieces and leave them to marinate in the refrigerator for up to an hour before cooking.
Serving suggestions
You can serve wraps are a light meal, or with a side dish such as rice, salad or potatoes. I also like to serve them with an added sauce or dressing. Here are some of my favorite options:
- Avocado Lime Ranch Dressing - This creamy dressing is a great substitute for the mayo.
- Chili Lime Rice - A flavorful rice dish with a hint of spice.
- Black Bean Corn Salad - I love this colorful salad, and it pairs incredibly well with the seasoning in the chicken.
- Guacamole with Lemon - You can't beat a creamy guacamole with chicken.
- Strawberry Pineapple Salsa - This refreshing salsa is perfect for summer.
- Healthy Ranch Dip - I love ranch, and this healthy version is made with Greek yogurt!
- Cheesy Tex Mex Sour Cream Sauce - A creamy, cheesy sauce always hits the spot.
Variations
More veggies: Feel free to add more veggies to the wrap! Other suitable vegetables includes cucumber, shredded carrots, kale, spinach, corn and peppers.
Dairy free: Omit the cheese, and make sure to use dairy free tortillas and mayo if you want to keep the dish dairy free.
Vegetarian: To make a vegetarian version, simply replace the chicken with a vegetarian protein such as roasted chickpeas.
Low carb: You can buy low carb or keto tortillas, which would make the recipe keto friendly. Alternatively, you can use lettuce leaves in place of the tortillas.
Leftovers
Leftover avocado chicken wraps can be stored in a refrigerator for up to 2 days.
The wraps can tend to get soft over time, so I like to prepare the ingredients, and store them separately. Then, when I am ready to eat, I will assemble the wraps.
The vegetables and cooked chicken can be stored separately for up to 3 days. The wraps will taste much better when they are assembled fresh!
Frequently asked questions
Wraps and burritos are similar in that they are tortillas wrapped around a variety of ingredients. However, a burrito is specifically a Mexican wrap which usually contains more ingredients, including rice. Wraps are usually more simple and smaller with less filling.
