If you thought tortilla chips were hard to make, think again. All you need is an air fryer and 5 minutes of your time. These crispy tortilla chips can be made with flour tortillas or corn tortillas - choose your favorite!
I love making these as a quick snack when I feel like something crunchy. You can add your favorite seasoning to make the chips sweet, spicy or more traditional.
🥘 Ingredients
The only ingredients you will need to make air fryer tortilla chips is tortillas, vegetable oil and any seasoning you like.
You can use flour tortillas or corn tortillas. I prefer small flour tortillas, which are much more common here in the UK. Corn tortillas will make more authentic flavored tortilla chips. The method is the same regardless of what type of tortilla you use.
You will also need an air fryer.
🔪 Instructions
First, slice the tortillas into triangles. You can choose the size, I typically slice each tortilla into 6 sections.
Then, spray or brush a thin layer of oil on both sides of each chip. Use a pastry brush if you have one, but the back of a spoon or your fingers will also work well.
Sprinkle a little seasoning over the chips. I like to add salt, but you can see other variations below.
Place the tortilla chips in an air fryer in one layer. It's fine if they overlap a little, since they will move around as soon as the air starts circulating. Avoid air frying too many chips at the same time, as they will not cook evenly.
Air fry for 2 minutes on 200°C or 390°F, then shake the basket and air fry for another minute or two. Check if they are crispy. These cook really fast, so I like to check them every 2 minutes until they are done. They typically only need 3-5 minutes, depending on your air fryer.
Serve the tortilla chips immediately, or leave them in room temperature for up to a few hours before serving.
💭 Top tips
Here are my top tips to succeed with this recipe:
- Your air fryer might cook faster or slower than mine. Check the chips and shake the basket every 2 minutes to prevent burning. The tortilla chips are cooked when they are crispy, and golden on the edges.
- Be careful not to overcrowd the basket. You want to keep one single layer of chips.
- Add a thin layer of oil to each chip. This will ensure that the chips become crispy without drying out or burning.
🥗 Serving suggestions
Here are some of my favorite ways to serve tortilla chips:
With a dip: Try serving them with a dip such as strawberry and pineapple salsa, guacamole with lemon or roasted red pepper hummus.
As nachos: Use them to make your favorite loaded nachos!
As a snack: You don't need any sides to enjoy delicious tortilla chips as a snack.
As a cracker: Eat them as crackers with a delicious spread or some cheese. I love these with whipped feta with honey.
📖 Variations
You can add a variety of flavors and seasoning to the tortilla chips to make them more interesting. Here are some of my favorite alternatives:
Cinnamon and sugar: Sprinkle some cinnamon and sugar on top for a sweet treat. Kind of like churro tortilla chips. Amazing!
Spicy: Add a sprinkle of chili powder or your favorite spicy seasoning powder to make hot tortilla chips.
Cheesy: Try sprinkling it with powdered cheese, like white cheddar popcorn powder, or nutritional yeast for a vegan version.
🍲 Leftovers
Store these tortilla chips in an airtight container in room temperature. The chips will slowly lose its crispiness over time. Enjoy them immediately if possible, or store them for up to 3 days.
I like to keep tortillas available in my pantry, and turn them into chips as required.
Do not refrigerate the air fried tortilla chips, as they will go soft faster.
