Ingredients
Bread: Any bread can be used for this recipe! Try sourdough bread, dark rye bread, regular sandwich bread, focaccia or ciabattas. You will need two slices per sandwich.
Cheese: Use your favorite melt-able cheese. Mozzarella, cheddar and Monterey Jack are great options.
Spread: We add a spread to prevent the bread from being too dry. I like to use butter, but mayonnaise or olive oil also works well.
Seasoning: In this recipe we make the sandwich plain, but you can absolutely add some seasoning for a little flavor. See the variations section below for some ideas.
Instructions
You can find full instructions + ingredient measurements in the recipe card at the bottom of this page
First, spread butter on both sides of a slice of bread. Top with shredded or sliced cheese. Then, place another slice of bread over the cheese. Make sure that the second slice of bread is also buttered on both sides.
Place the sandwich in an air fryer. Air fry at 300 F / 150 C for about 5 minutes to allow the cheese to melt, and then increase the temperature to 400 F / 200 C for about 1 minute on each side to toast the bread.
Top tips
- Keep an eye on the bread, as it can burn pretty fast.
- Turning the sandwich can be a little messy since it has butter on both sides. I like to use a spatula or tongs to do the job.
- Change up the recipe by using your favorite spread, bread and fillings.
- If cooking multiple grilled cheese sandwiches, you might have to do it in several batches. Avoid stacking sandwiches on top of each other, or they will not toast evenly.

Greek version: Add crumbled feta, sliced olives and tomatoes to the sandwich.

These sandwiches definitely taste best when enjoyed immediately!
Any leftovers can be stored in a refrigerator for up to 2 days and reheated, but they will not taste as good as when they are freshly made.
