    Bratwurst

Bratwurst is a German sausage well suited for boiling, grilling, baking and air frying. It's often served hot dog style with buns, or with caramelized onions and side dishes for lunch or dinner.

You can find bratwurst served across the world during Oktoberfest, but these sausages are amazing any time of the year. And with this easy air fryer recipe, they have never been easier to cook!

    Instructions

You can find full instructions + ingredient measurements in the recipe card at the bottom of this page

Air fryer bratwursts could really not be easier to make!

To ensure an even cooking result, I recommend placing the brats in the air fryer basket in a single layer. Avoid stacking them on top of each other.

Air fry at 350 F / 180 C for about 10 minutes, flipping them once about halfway through. The sausages should be golden brown on the surface.

If you want to be certain that the sausages have cooked through, you can use a meat thermometer. The internal temperature of the brats should be 160 F / 71 C.

Remove them from the air fryer, and serve.

💡 TIP! Only have frozen bratwurst at hand? No problem! You can air fry frozen brats at 350 F / 180 C for about 15 minutes. Frozen sausages only take about 5 minutes longer to cook than chilled sausages.

    Top tips

    • Place the brats in a single layer in the air fryer. If you're cooking a large amount of sausages, you should cook them in multiple batches.
    • Flip the sausages halfway through cooking.
    • Your air fryer might cook a little faster or slower than mine. Keep an eye on the bratwursts to prevent them from burning.

    Serving suggestions

Serve the air fried bratwurst as an entree with your favorite side dishes and dipping sauces. Here are some of my favorite options:

    • Sauces: Honey BBQ Sauce, Ginger Scallion Sauce, Yogurt Dill Sauce, Cheesy Tex Mex Sour Cream Sauce
    • Side dishes: Air Fryer Garlic Bread, Caramelized Onions, Slow Cooker Red Cabbage, Spiralized Potatoes, Air Fryer Potato Wedges

    Variations

Glazed: When the sausages have cooked for about 10 minutes, you can use a pastry brush or spoon to add a thin layer of glaze to the top of the sausages. Try for example ketchup, BBQ sauce, or hot sauce. This will add a lot of flavor to the brats.

Sliced sausages: Cut down on the cooking time by slicing or dicing the sausages before you add them to the air fryer. Depending on how large the pieces are, you might be able to air fry the brats in a matter of minutes.

    Leftovers

Store leftover cooked sausages in a sealed container in a refrigerator for up to 2 days. You can either reheat them in an air fryer or microwave and serve them as an entree, or use them in other dishes like sandwiches, pasta dishes, soups and more.

This is a great way to meal prep brats to use in multiple meals throughout the week. The cooked sausages can be diced, sliced or served whole.

    Frequently asked questions

Can you air fry frozen brats?

Yes! Frozen bratwurst can be cooked at the same temperature, but will typically need around 15 minutes to cook through completely.

Can you put aluminum foil in an air fryer?

Yes. You can add aluminum foil at the bottom of the air fryer to make cleanup a little easier.

Why did the casing burst on my bratwurst?

The bratwurst casings have a tendency to burst, crack or split during cooking. You can usually prevent this by following the temperature and cooking times as instructed. You can also strategically use a knife to cut through the skin on a few places on each sausage to control where it splits.

How to I defrost frozen sausages?

You can defrost frozen sausages safely by transferring them from a freezer to a refrigerator. Keep them refrigerated for several hours, or overnight.
