These easy sausage meatballs are made from sausage meat. This makes them really flavorful, without requiring any further ingredients. They are perfect to serve as appetizers, in a sandwich, or with pasta.

Do you have sausages in your fridge, but really want meatballs for dinner? That was my situation when I first created this recipe. It honestly could not be easier to turn your raw sausages into meatballs, and they taste great!

Ingredients
This recipe only requires one ingredient: sausage meat! You can buy sausage meat in most supermarkets, but you can also just buy uncooked sausages and remove the casings.
Sausage meat, or sausages, comes in many flavors. I like to use a sausage meat that I know my family will like. If you're using plain or unseasoned sausages, you can also add some extra seasoning. See below for more variations!
Instructions
If using sausages, you can remove the casings by slicing them length ways and pulling them off.
Mash together the sausage meat in a bowl, and add any extra seasoning if you want.
Roll into meatballs, and set them to the side.
Warm up some oil on medium heat in a skillet or frying pan, then add the meatballs. Make sure not to overcrowd the pan.
Cook the meatballs for 5-7 minutes, while turning occasionally. The sausages should have a nice char all over, and be cooked through.
You can use a meat thermometer to check that the meatballs are cooked, or simply slice one in half and ensure that they are browned and hot throughout.
Top tips
Here are my top tips to succeed with these fabulous meatballs:
- Use your favorite sausage meat, or add your favorite seasoning.
- Cook them on medium heat to ensure that the meatballs get a nice char without burning them
- Since sausage meat contains a fair amount of fat, you will probably need less oil compared to cooking regular meatballs
Serving suggestions
You can serve sausage meatballs just like how you would serve any other types of meatballs. You can serve them on toothpicks as an appetizer, with healthy spaghetti sauce and spaghetti for dinner, or use them to make sticky BBQ meatballs.
Meatballs can also be used in other dishes, such as pasta bakes, casseroles, and slow cooker meatball stew.
Variations
I really love making these meatballs as is, with only one ingredient. However, if you want to change things up, or if you only have plain or unseasoned sausage meat available, here are some alternative seasonings or ingredients you can add:
- Caramelized onions
- Sun dried tomatoes, spinach and grated mozzarella
- Grated apple
- Smoked paprika and garlic powder
- Salt and roughly ground black pepper
Leftovers
Leftover sausage meatballs can be stored in an airtight container in a refrigerator for up to 4 days. You can also freeze them for up to 12 months.
I like to reheat them in a microwave or skillet and serve the leftovers warm. Frozen sausage meatballs can be thawed in the freezer, then reheated in a microwave, or you can cook them in an oven directly from frozen.
Frequently asked questions
Yes! You can use the filling from either pork or chicken sausages to make meatballs.
Vegetarian sausage has a very different consistency, and they might not hold together well. Let me know how they turn out if you decide to try.
