Steamed green beans
Steamed green beans are a popular side dish. The green beans are steamed over hot water, making them softer and easier to eat, without adding any seasoning or additional flavor.
If you find steamed green beans to be plain, you can add a variety of toppings for flavor, or simply serve them with a flavorful entree and sauce.
Instructions
- Add 1 cup water to your Instant Pot.
- Wash and rinse the green beans, and cut off any stems.
- Add a steamer basket or a trivet to the Instant Pot, and place the green beans on top.
- Close and seal the lid on the Instant Pot, and cook using the MANUAL or PRESSURE COOK setting for 0 minutes. The green beans will finish steaming by the time the Instant Pot reaches pressure.
- Quickly release the pressure according to the manufacturer's instructions, and remove the green beans from the Instant Pot.
- Serve the green beans immediately with your favorite entree.
Frozen green beans
Only got frozen green beans? No problem! You can make Instant Pot frozen green beans using the same instructions.
Steamed frozen green beans will be slightly softer than steamed fresh green beans, but still taste fantastic. The Instant Pot method is a fantastic way to cook either one of them.
Top tips
- Setting the timer to 0 gives the green beans enough time to gently steam. If you want really soft green beans, you can set the timer to 1 instead.
- Make sure to wash the green beans, and cut off any stems before cooking.

Variations
Other veggies: You can steam other semi hard vegetables at the same time as the green beans. Try adding sliced carrots, broccoli, cauliflower or asparagus to the Instant Pot at the same time.
Toppings: Top your steamed green beans with flavorful garnishes such as lemon juice, grated Parmesan, chopped almonds, crispy onions, red pepper flakes, sliced red onions, olives, or crispy bacon.
Leftovers
Store leftover Instant Pot green beans in a sealed container in a refrigerator for up to 4 days. You can eat them cold, but I prefer to warm them up in a microwave for a few minutes and serve them warm.
You can also re-use leftover green beans in other dishes, like Hamburger Soup.
