Why you should steam asparagus in an instant pot
- The timer is accurate - you don't have to worry about accidentally overcooking the vegetables.
- Using the instant pot leaves you more space on the stove top to cook other dishes.
- With a 0 minutes cook time, it's really quick.
- You can steam one single bunch, or a large batch at the same time.
Asparagus
Asparagus is a common spring vegetable. It's praised for containing few carbohydrates and few calories, which makes it suitable for many diets, including low carb, vegan, keto, paleo and whole30.
The vegetable also contains a variety of vitamins and fiber, which makes it a healthy addition to any meal.
There are many ways to prepare asparagus, but steaming it might be one of the most popular methods.
Instructions
- Add water to the instant pot.
- Place a steaming basket or trivet in the pot.
- Cut off any tough ends of the asparagus, then place them on the trivet.
- Secure the lid, and turn the valve to sealing. Set the pressure cooker to MANUAL or PRESSURE COOK on high pressure, and set the timer to 0 minutes.
- With a 0-minute cook time, the instant pot will notify you and turn itself off as soon as it reaches pressure. Quickly release the pressure from the pressure cooker.
- Immediately remove the asparagus from the instant pot.
Top tips
- Make sure to quickly release all steam from the instant pot as soon as it indicates that the asparagus is cooked. If you leave it for a minute or two, the asparagus could quickly become a little soggy.
- If you wish to season the asparagus before cooking, you can rub it with a little olive oil or water to help the seasoning stick to it.
Serving suggestions
Instant pot steamed asparagus is an excellent side dish that you can serve with a variety of entrees. You can also use it as an ingredient in other dishes, such as salads or casseroles. Here are some of my favorite dishes to serve it with:
- Air Fryer Steak - Steak and asparagus is a classic, but delicious dinner option.
- Pesto Baked Salmon - This baked salmon is really easy to make.
- Air Fryer Pork Roast - Serve steamed asparagus with your roast dinner.
- Vegetarian cottage pie with lentils - Add some greens to this vegetarian meal.
Variations
Toppings: Place your steamed asparagus on a plate, and add any toppings you like. Some of my favorite options includes fresh parsley, lemon juice, salt and pepper, Parmesan or roughly chopped almonds.
Mixed vegetables: You can actually steam a combination of different vegetables at the same time. Try adding broccoli, cauliflower or green beans to the instant pot along with the asparagus if you want to cook mixed vegetables for dinner.
With butter: Add a little butter on top of the asparagus before steaming them. The butter will melt, and give the vegetables a lovely flavor.
Leftovers
Store leftover pressure cooked asparagus in a sealed container in a refrigerator for up to 4 days. Reheat it for a few minutes in a microwave and serve it as a side dish with future meals, or use it in other dishes.
I love to use leftover asparagus in salads, like my favorite asparagus pasta salad.
