Steamed or boiled cabbage is a traditional side dish. It's become really popular in recent years, as it is low calorie, and suitable for essentially most diets.
I've previously shared my favorite Sauteed Red Cabbage and Slow Cooker Red Cabbage, but pressure cooking cabbage is my favorite way to prepare white cabbage.

Ingredients
Cabbage: In this recipe we use an entire head of white cabbage. I don't recommend substituting with other types of cabbage, like savoy cabbage or red cabbage, as these have different cooking requirements.
Butter: Butter improves the consistency of the cabbage. You can use regular butter, or dairy free or vegan butter if necessary.
Chicken stock: We always have to add liquid to the Instant Pot to avoid the Instant Pot burn message. Chicken stock, or vegetable stock, adds more flavor, but you can also use water instead.
Salt + pepper: Adds a little flavor to the dish. This can of course be omitted if needed.
Instructions
You can find full instructions + ingredient measurements in the recipe card at the bottom of this page
One: Wash the cabbage, and cut into bite sized pieces. Add the cabbage, along with the other ingredients, to the Instant Pot.
Two: Pressure cook for 5 minutes on high pressure, followed by 5 minutes of natural pressure release.
Three: Release the remaining pressure, remove the lid, and stir the cabbage to distribute the butter evenly. Add more seasoning to taste, and serve.
Top tips
- I recommend cutting the cabbage into large chunks, rather than shredding it. Finely shredded cabbage will be really soft and mushy.
- Adjust the seasoning to suit your preference.
- You can also use sliced or diced cabbage, as long as the leaves are frozen separately.
Serving suggestions
Instant Pot cabbage is best served as a side dish for lunch or dinner. You can pair it with any entree, however it tastes particularly good with a classic roast dinner. Here are some of my favorite recipes to make with it:
- Air Fryer Roast Beef
- Air Fryer Pork Roast
- Gammon Steaks
- Honey Glazed Roast Chicken
- Instant Pot Pulled Pork Shoulder
- Honey Mustard Pork Chops
Variations
More flavor: Try adding more seasoning, or shredded apples or onions to make the cabbage more flavorful. Dried herbs are excellent sources of flavor.
Dairy free + vegan: Use a dairy free and vegan butter alternative, or omit the butter if you prefer.

Leftovers
Store leftover cooked cabbage in a sealed container in a refrigerator for up to 4 days. Reheat it in a skillet or microwave for a few minutes, or add the cabbage to other dishes like casseroles and soups.
This is a great way to meal prep cabbage, as you can easily cook a large quantity.
Frequently asked questions
Yes. You can cook a whole cabbage in the Instant Pot by pressure cooking it for 10 minutes. I recommend cutting it first however, as this allows seasoning to distribute evenly throughout the vegetable.
The core, or the end, of a cabbage is tough and unpleasant to eat. Remove it by cutting the cabbage in quarters, and slice off the end.

Recipe
Instant Pot Cabbage
Equipment
Ingredients
- 1 head cabbage
- 1 cup chicken stock
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
Instructions
- Cut cabbage into bite sized pieces, or large chunks.
- Add water, cabbage, salt, pepper and butter to the Instant Pot. Don't stir.
- Seal the lid on the pressure cooker, and select the PRESSURE COOK or MANUAL setting. Set the timer to 5 minutes. The Instant Pot will take around 5 minutes to gain pressure, before the timer starts counting down.
- When the cabbage is cooked, allow the pressure to release naturally for 5 minutes, before you turn the sealing valve to release the pressure according to the manufacturer's instructions. Be careful, as the steam will be hot!
- Stir to incorporate the melted butter evenly over the cabbage, and add any additional seasoning to taste. Remove the cabbage from the liquid before serving.
