Gammon steaks, or ham steaks, are usually served as a typical Sunday roast dinner with vegetables and potatoes. In the UK we also like to serve it with french fries and a fried egg!
This lovely dish is super versatile, and cooks in only a few minutes. It's an excellent alternative to roast ham if you're only cooking for a few people, and a cheaper alternative to beef steaks.

Gammon
Gammon is essentially ham that has been cured like bacon. It's very common in the UK, and many people enjoy it as their special Sunday dinner, or even on Christmas Day.
Gammon tastes much more salty than regular ham, but the two look and feel identical. You can therefore use this recipe to cook either gammon or regular ham steaks.
In this recipe we use large steaks of gammon. You can buy these steaks in most British supermarkets, or you can simply carve steaks from a raw gammon joint.
Instructions
Heat up some oil or butter in a cast iron skillet or grill pan on medium to high heat. Place the gammon steak in the skillet, and coat with ground black pepper on either side. You don't have to add any salt to gammon, as it's already quite salty.
Cook for about 3 minutes on each side, or until the meat looks quite cooked. If you're not sure how to cook gammon steaks, you're waiting for the meat to be white with some slight browning on the edges, as opposed to red or pink raw meat.
💡 TIP! Although not traditional, you can totally add more seasoning to the gammon, such as garlic and paprika, or Cajun seasoning mix.
Top tips
Here is my best advice to achieve the perfect gammon steaks:
- Make sure not to overcook the steaks. They don't take very long to cook through!
- If you think gammon is too salty you can soak the steaks in water for a few hours. This will reduce the salt content and make the meat easier to eat.
- Cooking the steaks in a grill pan will give them nice little stripes which look really cool.
