Meal prepping breakfasts has changed my life. Waking up in the morning to find a ready made meal sitting in my refrigerator ready for me to dive in is such a time saver, and it's a great way to ensure that I start every morning with a healthy, nutritious breakfast.

These oats are also the perfect way to start your day. They give you plenty of energy, taste great, and can even be enjoyed on the go.

Check out my collection of healthy breakfast recipes for more quick and easy meal inspiration!

    Ingredients

To make this recipe you will need rolled oats, milk, chocolate chips, cacao powder, maple syrup and Greek yogurt.

Rolled oats give the oatmeal the best texture, but quick cook oats can also be used. Unfortunately, steel cut oats won't work in this recipe.

You can use any type of milk that you like, either cow's milk, almond milk, soy milk, or my personal favorite: oat milk.

The ingredients required to make chocolate overnight oats laid out on a table.

    Instructions

This dish couldn't be easier to make! Simply add all ingredients to a bowl, then stir to combine.

Place the oatmeal in a sealed container, such as a mason jar or a meal prep container, and store it in a refrigerator for at least 6 hours, or ideally overnight.

The oats will absorb the liquid, and the overnight oats will be thick, creamy and delicious.

Overnight oats are really easy to make in a bowl. The grains will absorb the liquid overnight!

    Top tips

Here's my best tips to help you succeed with this recipe:

    • Use your favorite chocolate chips. Dark chocolate, milk chocolate and white chocolate all work really well.
    • Feel free to top your oats with anything you like to add extra texture and flavors.
    • You can add any extra mix-ins, seasoning or sweeteners if you prefer.
    • Store the overnight oats in individual portion sized containers for convenient and pre-measured meals.

    Serving suggestions

Chocolate overnight oats are usually enjoyed for breakfast, but you can also serve them as a snack, lunch or late night meal. Here are some alternatives if you're looking for ideas to serve with your chocolate overnight oats:

    • Cinnamon Raisin Granola - A sprinkle of granola on your oats give them a lovely crunch!
    • Dark Chocolate Almonds - Double up on the chocolate with these simple, but easy chocolate covered almonds.
    • Roasted Walnuts - Roasted walnuts taste great, and add texture to the dish.
    • Blueberry Granola - Add some nutrition and beautiful flavors with this simple granola.

    Variations

Here are some fun variations of the dish that you can try if you're looking to change it up:

Chocolate orange oats: Add a little orange extract to your oats. Super yummy!

Mint chocolate chip oats: Add ½ teaspoon mint extract to your oats.

Gluten free: Make sure to use gluten free rolled oats if you want to make gluten free overnight oats.

Dairy free: Use a dairy free milk substitute, such as oat milk or almond milk, as well as a vegan yogurt alternative to keep the dish dairy free.

    Leftovers

Chocolate overnight oats can be stored in a sealed container in a refrigerator for up to 4 days. I love to prepare a large batch for quick and easy breakfasts through the week.

You can also freeze overnight oats for up to 3 months. I highly recommend storing the oats in portion sized containers for an easy grab and go breakfast option.

    Frequently asked questions

Can you serve overnight oats warm?

Yes! Overnight oats are traditionally served cold, but you can warm them up in a microwave or in a pot on the stove top and serve them hot if you prefer.

How soon can I eat overnight oats?

Ideally, you want to leave the oats to chill for at least 6 hours, as this allows the oats to absorb most of the liquid from the dish. However, if you're happy to eat thin oatmeal, you can eat it much sooner.

My go-to breakfast this year. I use less chocolate in mine to make it a little healthier, but it still satisfies my cravings.
