Roasting nuts could be easier than you'd think! All you need is some nuts, an oven, and about 15 minutes of your time. I have previously shared how you can roast hazelnuts, and you might also be interested in checking out more of my easy nut recipes including dark chocolate almonds!
Roasted walnuts are crunchy and delicious, with that taste of toasted nuts that we all know and love. They are also super versatile, and can be used to a variety of purposes.
Instructions
This recipe requires walnut halves or pieces with the shells removed. If the walnuts you use have shells, you have to remove them using a nut cracker.
Place the walnuts on a sheet pan. Make sure to spread them out, and not to overcrowd the pan. Preheat your oven to 390 °F / 200 °C / 190 °C fan oven.
Roast the walnuts in your oven for approximately 15 minutes. Turn them halfway through cooking to ensure that they roast evenly.
Keep an eye on the nuts, as they can burn quite easily. Remove them when they are slightly golden in color, and allow them to cool down before placing them in a storage container.
Top tips
Here is all my best advice that will help you succeed with this recipe:
- Your nuts could roast faster than mine. Keep an eye on them to make sure they don't burn!
- For smaller amounts of nuts, you can also roast them in a skillet or frying pan on low heat.
- Avoid the temptation to turn up the heat. This could cause the walnuts to burn.
Serving suggestions
I like to enjoy roasted walnuts as a snack, but you can also use them in other dishes. Try adding them, either whole or chopped, to salads, cookies, or as a crunchy garnish over stews or soups.
You can also add walnuts to blueberry granola, or use them as topping for chocolate peanut butter oatmeal.
Variations
If you're looking to change the nuts up, and maybe add a little extra flavor, I highly recommend trying any of these variations:
- Sprinkle a little cinnamon on top.
- Coat them in a thin layer of honey for a sweet version.
- For a kick of spice, you can add a little red pepper flakes.
- You can also combine walnuts with other nuts of similar sizes, such as brazil nuts or hazelnuts.
Leftovers
You can store roasted walnuts in containers in your pantry for up to a year. I like to make a big batch to keep on hand, and use them in multiple dishes and meals over time.
You can actually also freeze walnuts for up to a year. Defrost them and remove any excess liquid before use.
Frequently asked questions
