If you love roasted hazelnuts, you might also enjoy other easy snacks, such as date walnut balls, air fryer chickpeas, dark chocolate almonds or oven dried blueberries.

    Hazelnuts

Hazelnuts are a hard shelled nut. After the shells are removed by a nut cracker, they can be enjoyed both raw and cooked.

You can buy nuts with the shells removed in many supermarkets, typically in the baking section, and hazelnuts in the shell are typically available during the holiday season.

Hazelnuts have a sweet, mild flavor, and are commonly used in sweet treats and desserts. It's a popular flavor used in coffee syrups, chocolate and baked goods, however they can also be used in savory recipes such as savory pastries and salads.

    Instructions

This recipe requires hazelnuts with shells removed. If your hazelnuts have a hard shell, you will have to remove them using a nut cracker.

Place the hazelnuts on a baking pan. Make sure to spread them out, and not to overcrowd the pan.

    Preheat your oven to 390 °F / 200 °C / 190 °C fan oven.

Roast the hazelnuts in your oven for approximately 20 minutes. Turn them halfway through cooking to ensure that they roast evenly.

Keep an eye on the nuts, as they can burn quite easily. Remove the hazelnuts from the oven, and allow them to cool down. The skins on the nuts will not be really flaky. Rub them with your hands for the lose skins to come off, and discard these.

Place the roasted nuts in a container for storage, or use them in your favorite recipe.

    Top tips

Here are my best tips for making amazing roasted hazelnuts:

    • Eating nuts with peeling skins is not nice. Make sure to remove all lose skins before you serve or store the roasted hazelnuts.
    • Keep an eye on the nuts, as they can go from roasted to burned very quickly.
    • If any nuts look or feel burned after roasting, you can easily remove these before transfering the nuts into a container.

    Serving suggestions

Obviously, you can enjoy these nuts as you would any other nut; as a snack, in cinnamon raisin granola, in oatmeal, or in trailmix.

Roasted hazelnuts are commonly used in sweet treats and desserts, including chocolate spreads, pie crusts and truffles.

    Leftovers

Roasted hazelnuts can be stored in your pantry in an airtight container for up to 6 months. They can also be frozen for up to 1 year. Keep in mind that frozen nuts should be thawed and drained before use.

I love to prepare a big batch of hazelnuts, and keep them in my pantry to use in a variety of dishes. They are particularly great to have on hand if you like to bake a lot.

    Frequently asked questions

Do you need to cook hazelnuts?

No. Hazelnuts are excellent eaten raw, but they tend to have a sweeter flavor when roasted. This is why many dessert recipes specifically call for roasted hazelnuts.

How long do roasted hazelnuts last?

6 months in an airtight container in a pantry, or 1 year frozen.
