I love a big bowl of comforting chili, and this turkey sweet potato chili is probably one of my favorites.
It has all the good flavors of chili, but is quite mild, making it perfectly suitable for children and others who are intolerant to spice. If you love a little heat, you can easily add extra chili to spice it up, or simply top your portion with some sliced raw chili.
The recipe is easy to make, low calorie, healthy, and is also dairy free, gluten free, nut free and soy free, making it suitable for most dietary requirements.
Ingredients
To make this simple chili recipe, you will need ground turkey, canned black beans, garlic, sweet potatoes, canned diced tomatoes, onion and chicken broth.
The seasoning we use is salt, pepper, coriander, cumin, paprika and chili powder.
💡 TIP! If you don't have all the seasoning suggested, you can also use a store bought chili seasoning mix.
Instructions
Dice the onion, grate the garlic finely, and dice the sweet potatoes into bite sized pieces. You can peel the potatoes if you prefer, but I don't!
Sauté the onion in olive oil in a large pot for a few minutes until the onion is soft and translucent. Then, add ground turkey, and cook until the meat is completely white.
Add the seasoning to the meat, and sauté for another minute or until fragrant, then add the sweet potato and stir to coat the pieces of potato with the seasoning.
Lastly, add the remaining ingredients to the chili, stir to combine, and cover the pot with a lid. Leave it to cook for about 20 minutes, or until the sweet potato is soft enough to pierce easily with a fork.
Add any additional seasoning to taste, then serve!
Top tips
Here are my best advice to help you succeed with this recipe:
- Sautéing the onion, garlic and seasoning is key to really bringing out the flavors of the seasoning. Don't skip this step!
- Dice the sweet potatoes into small bite sized pieces. If you cut them into larger chunks, the chili will have to cook for a little longer.
- You can peel the potatoes if you prefer. I like to keep the peel on, and I don't find that it affects the flavor or texture of the chili at all.
Serving suggestions
Chili is best served as a meal for lunch or dinner. You can serve it in a bowl as is, add some flavorful toppings, or serve it with side dishes. Here are some of my favorite serving options:
- Top the chili with lime wedges, cilantro and sour cream or Greek yogurt.
- I like to add sliced chili or jalapenos for some extra heat. This way, I can make my chili spicy, but everyone else can enjoy a milder flavor.
- Serve it with some chili lime rice, or plain white rice as a side dish.
- I love to top my baked potatoes with chili! Pair this with my favorite air fryer baked potatoes.
- Add some extra vegetables to the meal, and serve the chili with air fryer broccoli, or tomato and cucumber salad
Variations
Vegetarian + vegan: Substitute the ground turkey with a variety of drained and rinsed canned beans.
More vegetables: You can add any vegetables that you like to the chili. Cut them into pieces of the same size as the sweet potatoes, and enjoy. I suggest trying peppers, carrots, green beans or spinach.
Other beans: If you don't have black beans available, you can also use pinto beans, kidney beans or any similar bean. Make sure to use beans that are cooked or canned, rather than dry beans.
Leftovers
You can store leftover chili in a sealed container in a refrigerator for up to 4 days, or freeze it for up to 6 months.
Reheat the chili in a microwave, or in a pot on the stovetop, and serve it warm.
This recipe is perfect for make ahead meals and meal prep, and makes for an excellent freezer meal. As with most stews, the dish will continue to develop its flavor while it rests, which makes it taste even better the next day!
