I am such a big fan of popcorn. Did you know that popcorn is actually a whole grain? It's packed with fiber, and in many ways quite healthy. If you pop your own popcorn, you can also control exactly what you add to it - and dark chocolate is an excellent option.

This is one of my favorite movie snacks (maybe tied with my peanut butter popcorn), and it's really easy to make in just a few minutes.

    🥘 Ingredients

All you need to make this easy snack is dark chocolate and popped popcorn.

You can buy popcorn that has already been popped, or you can make your own using the stove top method, a popcorn machine or microwave popcorn.

    🔪 Instructions

Prepare your popcorn, and spread the popped popcorn out on a baking tray or baking sheet.

Roughly chop dark chocolate, or break it into squares. Add the chocolate to a bowl, and place it in a microwave for 30 seconds to melt it. Use a spoon to stir the chocolate. Repeat the process 1-2 times until the chocolate has melted completely.

Use a spoon or spatula to drizzle the chocolate over the popcorn. Drizzle it to cover evenly.

You can serve the chocolate covered popcorn immediately, or if you prefer, you can leave it to sit for an hour to allow the chocolate to firm up. If you leave the chocolate to cool down, you'll be able to eat the popcorn without getting sticky fingers!

    💭 Top tips

Here are my top tips to get this recipe perfect:

    • Not a fan of dark chocolate? No problem. Any chocolate will do, including white chocolate and milk chocolate. You can even use a combination of different types of chocolate!
    • Use sweet or unseasoned popcorn.
    • You can also add other ingredients to change up the flavors of the popcorn. Try adding some flaky sea salt or a drizzle of tahini or peanut butter.

    🥗 Serving suggestions

Popcorn is a great snack. Enjoy this as an afternoon treat, or make chocolate covered popcorn for your next movie night!

This recipe is also superb if you're serving snacks for a crowd with many dietary requirements. If you use a dark chocolate with few additives, it's gluten free, soy free, nut free, dairy free, egg free, sugar free and low calorie!

    🍲 Leftovers

Leftover chocolate covered popcorn can be stored in an airtight container for 2-3 days. Popcorn is best stored at room temperature.

    📋 Frequently asked questions

What can I add to popcorn for flavor?

Melted chocolate, peanut butter, honey and cinnamon, dried herbs, black pepper and sriracha, cinnamon and sugar, and caramel sauce are all great on top of popcorn.

    Is popcorn a vegetable?

No. Although popcorn is made by corn, which is a vegetable, the kernels are considered grains. Popcorn should therefore not be considered as part of your daily vegetable intake. It is however a great whole grain food source and an excellent source of fiber.
