I absolutely love marinated salmon, and this one is incredibly flavorful. Tender salmon is coated with a creamy yogurt based marinade packed with spices. After the fish is cooked in the oven or under the grill, it has perfect crispy skin.
Salmon is typically enjoyed as an entree, but you can serve this however you like. Whether that's as a main dish paired with sides, or added to salads or curries, is completely up to you.
I love how quick and easy this recipe is, and I'm sure you will too. It's a great option for dinner, but it's also well suited for made ahead lunches for school or work.
Ingredients
To make this recipe, I like to use fresh salmon fillets. If you have frozen salmon, you should defrost them in a refrigerator overnight before use.
Additionally, you will need Greek yogurt and seasoning for the tandoori marinade. I use turmeric, paprika, garam masala, salt and pepper, but you can also add, omit or substitute any of these to suit your preferences.
Instructions
Preheat the grill to the highest possible temperature if your oven has a grill element. Otherwise, preheat the oven to 220 °C / 430 °F / 200 °C fan oven.
Combine the yogurt and spices in a bowl. Place the salmon fillets on a baking pan, skin side down. Brush the salmon fillets to completely coat them in the marinade.
Bake the salmon under the grill for about 5 minutes, or in the oven for about 5-10 minutes.
The salmon should be pink, with a slightly darker color through the middle, and should flake easily at the touch of a fork when it is done.
Top tips
Here are my top tips to make sure that you succeed with this recipe:
- The cooking time can vary depending on the size and shape of the salmon fillets. Cooked salmon should be pink inside, and flake at the touch of a fork.
- You can change up the seasoning if you prefer. Feel free to add some chili powder for a spicy twist!
Serving suggestions
I like to serve the salmon as an entree, paired with flavorful side dishes. Here are some of my favorite pairings:
- Carrot rice - A flavorful rice dish with shredded carrots.
- Dill rice - Perfect cooked rice with dill and onions.
- Sauteed red cabbage - Sauteed red cabbage with a kick of pepper is an excellent side.
- Air fryer sweet potatoes - Baked sweet potatoes are super easy to make in the air fryer.
- Yogurt dill sauce - This mild sauce pairs perfect with salmon!
Alternative cooking methods
If you don't have an oven available, you can use any of these alternative cooking methods to make tandoori salmon:
Air fryer: Air fry the salmon for 20 minutes on 360 F / 180 C.
Skillet: Sear the salmon for about 2-3 minutes skin side up. Flip and cook for 3-5 more minutes.
On a griddle or grill: Sear on both sides for about 2-3 minutes each, or until the salmon has cooked through.
Leftovers
Store tandoori salmon in sealed containers in a refrigerator for up to 2 days. Reheat it under a grill, or in a microwave for a few minutes, and serve it warm with your favorite sides.
You can also dice leftover cooked salmon and eat it in sandwiches or salads as an alternative.
Frequently asked questions
Tandoori sauce, or tandoori marinade, is typically made by combining yogurt with a mixture of spices such as salt, coriander, chili powder, turmeric, paprika, garlic powder, pepper and ginger.
You can remove the skin before you grill the salmon if you wish, but this is optional. Personally, I prefer to keep the skin on.
Most salmon (depending on where you get it from) is safe to eat, including the skin. Some people prefer to discard the skin, while others eat it. If you want to eat it, I recommend searing or grilling the fish until the skin is crispy.
