Hummus makes for an excellent pasta sauce. It's thick and creamy, and full of flavor. You can make your own hummus (like my favorite roasted red pepper hummus), or just use a store bought variety to save time.

I love how simple yet flavorful this dish is, and I love that it all comes together in only 10 minutes. Perfect for busy days when you just want to put food on the table with as little hassle as possible.

This dish is also nut free, soy free, dairy free, vegan and vegetarian. It can also easily be made gluten free by using gluten free ingredients.

    Ingredients

To make this recipe you will of course need pasta. I use spaghetti, but you can use any type of pasta that you like, such as penne, tagliatelle or fusilli.

You will also need hummus, spinach, garlic, olive oil, red pepper flakes, and salt and pepper to season.

Garlic, spinach, hummus, red pepper flakes and pasta laid out on a table.

    Instructions

Boil pasta according to the package instructions in a pot.

Meanwhile, in a smaller pot or skillet, heat up the olive oil on medium to high heat. Add finely diced or grated garlic, and sauté for about 30 seconds, then add raw spinach.

Sauté the spinach for about a minute, or until it has wilted down completely. Then, add hummus, and stir to combine the ingredients. Leave the hummus sauce to gently simmer on medium to low heat for a few minutes, or until the pasta is done.

Drain off the excess pasta water, then add the hummus sauce to the pasta. Stir to coat completely.

Serve the hummus pasta immediately while it's still warm either alone, or paired with your favorite side dish.

    Top tips

Here is my best advice to help you make this dish perfectly:

    • As hummus is the main component of the sauce, it's also the main source of flavor. Make sure to use a hummus you like, such as your favorite brand or your favorite recipe.
    • The exact time it takes to cook your pasta will vary depending on the type and brand of the pasta. Check the package instructions for more information.

    Serving suggestions

Wondering what to serve with hummus pasta? No problem, here are some of my favorite options:

    • Sauteed Spinach with Garlic - Amazing sauteed spinach is a fantastic pairing with this pasta dish.
    • Tomato and Mozzarella Salad - A simple, but delicious salad with Mediterranean roots.
    • Olive Salad - Mediterranean salad with bold flavors and beautiful colors.
    • Air Fryer Broccoli - Easy roasted broccoli prepared in an air fryer.

    Variations

Here are some fun variations of the dish that you can try:

With sun dried tomatoes: Sun dried tomatoes are amazing, and bring a lot of flavor to any dish. Add a few to the hummus sauce for a Tuscan variation.

Gluten free: Make sure to use gluten free pasta and gluten free hummus to make the recipe suit your dietary requirements.

With protein: Add some roasted chickpeas, shredded chicken or cooked lentils to the dish if you want to add more protein and make it extra filling.

    Leftovers

In my experience, pasta tends to absorb any liquid over time. You can store leftover hummus pasta in a sealed container in a refrigerator for up to 4 days, however keep in mind that the hummus will dry out.

I therefore like to keep the pasta and hummus sauce separate, and store any leftovers separately. You can then combine the spaghetti with the sauce, and reheat them in a microwave for future meals.

    Frequently asked questions

    Can you warm up hummus?

Absolutely. Although it's commonly served cold, you can warm up hummus and use it as a sauce in a variety of dishes.
