🥘 Ingredients
All you need to make this recipe is halloumi and your choice of vegetables. I use zucchini, broccolini, peppers, cherry tomatoes and olives for a Greek style stir fry.
You can also make a halloumi stir fry with any other veggies of your choice. Try adding thinly sliced carrots, eggplant, sugar snap peas, edamame, mushrooms, tofu and bok choi.
🔪 Instructions
Dice and slice all the ingredients in bite sized pieces. Heat some cooking spray or vegetable oil in a frying pan or wok, then add the halloumi and veggies.
Stir the ingredients as they fry until they have warmed through and reached the consistency you prefer, 4-7 minutes.
🧀 Halloumi
Halloumi is a Cypriot or Greek cheese with a high melting point, meaning it can be fried and cooked without melting like most cheeses. It is known as the "squeeky cheese" because of its unique texture.
The cheese is very unique, and can not really be substituted. It is typically stored in brine, and has a salty flavor, which makes it perfect to use as a vegetarian protein in main courses.
💭 Top tips
Here's my best tips on how to make the BEST stir fry with halloumi:
- Don't try to substitute halloumi with any other cheese. It won't really work in this recipe.
- If you're using very hard vegetables such as cauliflower or carrots, you might want to stir fry these for a while before adding the other ingredients.
- If you use soft vegetables such as tomatoes, you might want to add these towards the end of the frying time as they cook extra fast.
- You can use a stir fry sauce if you want, but I think this recipe tastes really fresh and flavorful without it. Try adding some balsamic vinegar or sweet chili sauce if you want.
- Stir fries are meant to be cooked on a high heat while you stir the ingredients. If you cook it on low heat, the vegetables will be more steamed than seared.
