Stir fries are a common dinner choice at my house. Made in 15 minutes with healthy, they are easy to throw together using whichever ingredients you have available.
This simple chicken and broccoli stir fry is one of my personal favorites. You can change it up by adjusting the seasoning and sauces, but the base recipe is delicious just the way it is.
🥘 Ingredients
To make this easy dish, you will need chicken breast fillets, broccoli, red onion and garlic.
For the sauce, you will also need olive oil or vegetable oil, soy sauce, oyster sauce, rice vinegar and honey.
I like to cook my stir fries in a wok, but you can also use a skillet with high edges.
🔪 Instructions
Stir frying goes really fast, so you will want to prepare the ingredients before you start.
Combine all the ingredients for the sauce in a bowl, and set it to the side.
Finely grate the garlic, slice the red onion, and chop the broccoli into bite sized florets. Dice the chicken into similar sized pieces.
Add some vegetable or olive oil to a skillet or wok on high heat. Allow it to warm up properly. Then, add diced chicken fillets, and stir fry until the chicken is cooked through, about 5 minutes. Remove the chicken from the pan, and leave it on the side.
Add the broccoli florets and grated garlic to the wok. Stir fry until the broccoli has mostly cooked through, about 3-5 minutes. Then add the chicken back, along with the sauce and sliced red onions.
Stir fry for another minute, and serve.
🐓 Chicken
I recommend using chicken breast fillets. They are lean and tasty, and cook quickly. If you prefer chicken thighs, you should keep in mind that these have a slightly longer cooking time.
Chicken with bones in are not commonly used in stir fries, as they are inconvenient to eat. If you only have bone-in chicken, I suggest removing the bones as you dice the meat.
💭 Top tips
Here are my top tips to make the best chicken and broccoli stir fry:
- Stir fries should be made in a really hot skillet. Keep stirring as you're frying the food to cook it evenly on all sides.
- Cook the chicken first, then remove it from the skillet as you're frying the broccoli. This will prevent the meat from drying out.
- You can replace the ingredients for the sauce as you please, or even use a store bought stir fry sauce.
🥗 Serving suggestions
Serve chicken and broccoli stir fry as is, or with a classic side dish. Stir fries are often served with rice. Try serving it with plain rice, or Thai coconut rice if you want a change.
As an alternative to rice, you can also serve it with quinoa or other grains, or cauliflower rice.
🍲 Leftovers
Leftover chicken and broccoli stores well. You can store the stir fry by itself, or in portioned out meal prep containers with rice or other side dishes. I recommend reheating them before serving!
Storing: Store the leftovers in airtight containers in a refrigerator for up to 3 days.
Freezing: You can freeze chicken and broccoli stir fry for up to 3 months. Thaw it in a fridge overnight before using it.
Reheating: The leftovers are best served warm! Reheat them in a microwave for a few minutes, or in a skillet.
