Fluffy, creamy mashed potatoes are one of my all-time favorite side dishes, and I'm so excited to share with you my slightly healthier mashed potatoes recipe.
After attempting to make mashed potatoes without milk, sour cream and butter, I finally found the perfect substitute: Greek yogurt. It makes the potatoes perfectly creamy, but is generally healthier than the alternatives. And if you're looking for a dairy free version, there are plenty of dairy free yogurt substitutes on the market.
This recipe is also gluten free, nut free, soy free, vegetarian and can easily be made vegan. In other words, it's an excellent dish to make if you're catering for multiple dietary requirements.
Ingredients
For this recipe you will need potatoes, Greek yogurt, nutmeg, salt and pepper.
You can use whichever potatoes you prefer, but potatoes with a higher starch content, such as russets, Yukon golds, Maris Piper or Desiree are generally considered best suited for mashing. These varieties will give you perfect fluffy mashed potatoes.
Instructions
Start by peeling and dicing the potatoes. You can dice them however you like, but I like to cut them quite small as it makes the process much faster.
Add the potatoes to a pot of boiling water, with enough water to cover the potatoes completely.
Boil the potatoes until they are soft enough to easily pierce with a fork. Depending on the size of your potato chunks, this can take anything from 5 to 25 minutes.
After the potatoes have boiled, drain off the excess water, and add seasoning and Greek yogurt.
Mash the potatoes with a potato masher until smooth. Lastly, add any additional seasoning or more yogurt to taste, then serve the healthy mashed potatoes with your favorite entree.
Top tips
Here's my best advice to help you succeed with the recipe:
- Use a potato masher to mash your potatoes. Don't make the mistake of using a hand blender or electric whisk, as these will mash your potatoes into a puree.
- On that point, be careful not to mash your potatoes too much. They can quickly turn gluey and pasty, and they will be unpleasant to eat.
- You might want to add more or less Greek yogurt or seasoning to suit your preferences. Feel free to add these ingredients to taste.

Serving suggestions
Healthy mashed potatoes are best served as a side dish with your lunch or dinner. Here are some of my favorite entrees to pair it with:
- Air Fryer Steak - Make perfectly cooked steaks in your air fryer.
- Honey Sriracha Meatballs - These sweet and spicy meatballs are perfect served with mash.
- Spatchcock Chicken - Quick roast chicken, ideal for easy dinners.
- Air Fryer Chicken Breast - Juicy chicken breasts cooked with minimal effort.
- Air Fryer Pork Tenderloin - Tenderloin is easier to cook than you'd think.
- BBQ Meatloaf - My favorite meatloaf comes with a BBQ glaze!
Variations
You can vary this dish endlessly depending on which flavors you like present in your mash. Here are some of my favorites:
Vegan / dairy free: Use a vegan and dairy free yogurt substitute.
Garlic and herbs: Add grated roasted garlic to the mash, along with your favorite herbs. Thyme, rosemary and chives all go great with mashed potatoes.
Ranch mashed potatoes: Add some ranch seasoning to the mash. Ranch seasoning is really just a blend of various spices and herbs, and tastes so good with the potatoes.
Extra texture: Add bacon bits, sliced scallions or freshly chopped herbs if you want to enhance the texture of the dish. These should be added after mashing the potatoes.
Leftovers
You can store leftover mashed potatoes in a sealed container in a refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat it and serve as a side dish with future meals, or use in other recipes such as potato and cheese balls.
